Anat Baniel Method® NeuroMovement® lessons are different from other lessons involving movement, such as exercise and yoga classes. The breakdown below shows the major similarities and differences.
Yoga / Exercise
- Exercise class is often fast-paced for a cardio workout.
- The movement taught in most yoga classes is to assume and hold prescribed poses or a series of poses.
- In exercise or yoga classes, if participants experience some minor pain or discomfort, their tendency is often to push through it in order to reach the goal of improved fitness or flexibility.
- The instructor generally models movements or poses.
Both
- All these classes involve movement.
- They all involve oral instructions.
- They may involve lying on a mat on the floor, or working in a sitting or standing position.
- Both yoga and NeuroMovement® tend to be done slowly.
NeuroMovement®
- Movements are done very slowly and gently, with attention to how the movements feel in the body.
- The immediate goal is to feel ease in the body while moving, rather than to perform a movement perfectly. Students are encouraged to avoid straining and to seek comfort.
- An initial movement is taught, followed by a sequenced series of variations of that initial movement.
- All of these practices support brain change. They set the conditions needed for the brain to learn easy, efficient movement, improved balance, and improved range of movement, as well as improvement in mental and emotional functioning.*
* Results from lessons will vary. No specific outcome is guaranteed. NeuroMovement® is an educational approach. It is not a therapy or a medical modality. As with any physical activity, consult your physician if you have concerns about the appropriateness of these lessons for you. They do involve lying on the back, side or belly and getting down to the floor and back up, though some modifications can be used. Best results are achieved from lessons at least twice per week.
